Site introduction :
This paper started life in an undergraduate unit for my B.A. (Music) degree at Deakin University in 1997.

Since starting in brass bands at age 10, I'd often reflect upon the diversity of repertoire. My tertiary level study gave me the chance to examine the development of band repertoire with a particular emphasis on so-called 'testpieces'.

From the 1800's, many contest organisers have required every competing band to play the same title to enable the adjudicator to compare the relative musical merits of each ensemble.

Please feel free to quote from it , just as long as you cite it's origin. An e-mail to me saying what you're doing would also be nice (although not manditory)!
